Inspired by Hasami Porcelain’s new Grey Collection and Japanese minimalism, I created a concept website that celebrates the latest addition to their lineup of modern and elegant tableware. I believe that the digital experience should be an extension of their brand, so the lackluster design of their current landing page moved me into creating one that celebrates the detail and craft displayed by the artisans in the historic town of Hasami, Japan.

Celebrating and highlighting the new collection
To effectively showcase the new grey collection in an elegant light, I aimed for a digital experience that is reminiscent of being at an art show, or flipping through a high-fashion magazine. The change in navigation direction after the hero section makes the experience more engaging, as if you’re being taken on a museum tour.

Art direction
While the basic elements of art direction were based on the current branding, there were no explicit guidelines, giving me more freedom to experiment with the presentation. The use of grids was based off the concept of the “Jubako”, Japanese lacquered tiered boxes that became the inspiration for the stacking feature of Hasami Porcelain’s products. This feature also helps in grouping together related content. Strategic use of white space and imagery keeps the site light and contemporary, a nod to the delicate feel of the Grey Collection. To balance the negative space and to avoid making the site feel cold and detached, a subtle texture was added to the warm background to create a more tactile experience and give a call-back to the unique feel of their products.

An elegant reimagining
I truly enjoyed working on this project because I wanted to create a small tribute (or fanart...?) to a great product crafted by dedicated artisans. With engaging navigation and a minimalist design, the new website offers an elegant journey through the beauty and features of The Grey Collection.
